YPS Celebrates Breakthrough in Low Energy Electron Cryo-Microscopy

In a groundbreaking development towards democratising access to advanced electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM), YPS proudly announces its pivotal role in the development of a purpose-built electron microscope operating at 100keV. This technological innovation, a collaboration spearheaded by Chris Russo's and Richard Henderson's groups in the LMB's Structural Studies Division, marks a significant departure from the escalating costs associated with state-of-the-art electron microscopes.

Traditional cryo-EM has long been regarded for its ability to unveil intricate atomic structures of biological materials. However, the financial and logistical barriers posed by current million-pound instruments have hindered widespread adoption. YPS, in collaboration with a dedicated team at LMB and other partners, has successfully engineered a cost-effective alternative, bringing the benefits of cryo-EM within reach of diverse researchers and institutes.

The groundbreaking features include the YPS-developed 100keV FEG, a low aberration objective lens with a cryobox, and a high-speed, high-efficiency electron detector.
